The Socknet Philosophy

  • We need an open system to help websites interact so they can help us interact. We do not need a platform to lock away applications.
  • We should have friends on one website and take them with us wherever we go.
  • We should be able to share content in a single step. A newsfeed to share everything we do on the web is a Good Thing™ if we control it ourselves.
  • We should have the chance to control our own data or keep it with a trusted social network provider.
  • We need one social network and it must be decentralized. The laws of a single nation or host must not restrict the entire system.
  • We should each be allowed to build upon the system and play by our own rules. The only rule is: be excellent to each other.
  • If the system ever becomes a platform, the users must gain utility from the platform that websites can't provide on their own. (This will probably never happen.)
  • We must be able to change providers with minimum hassle and take our username, data and friends with us.
  • The system's specification must eventually be presided over by a consortium with powers to enhance it and report on the compliance of the providers.
