From The Socknet

Considering eliminating the second mechanism for Provider URL discovery. If all Socknet providers are also OpenID providers, then they can just use the first mechanism. In the future, we plan to suggest that the OpenID specification include a mechanism for setting Provider URL's programmatically.

Change suggested form of Provider URLs?

During development of the prototype, it was discovered that the suggested form here doesn't work on Apache. Instead the OpenID has to be URL encoded twice to avoid a strange bug. This is likely to be different across different servers.

There were two reasons for the suggested form:

(1) It increases a URL's "guessability". This wasn't very important, but it was nice. (2) The URL is more meaningful when it contains the OpenID. And in fact, the URL is just as meaningful if the OpenID portion is double URL encoded, so there's no real problem here.

So, we'll probably change the "suggested form" to be anything that contains some form of the user's OpenID (whatever works best with the provider's server software).

There is no longer a suggested form of the Provider URL. However, the form previously suggested is now actively discouraged. --Dan 03:55, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
