Onion Domain

From The Socknet

Providers are encouraged to provide access to services and domains on the TOR network. This can be done fairly simply.

If a domain uses the TLD "onion", it is a TOR server.

Accessing TOR Services

To access the TOR network, install TOR and its helper program Privoxy on a system in your network and then send HTTP requests through its IP address using SOCKS5 whenever you deal with domains ending in ".onion". Many HTTP libraries have simple support for SOCKS5.

Running a Server

To run a provider as a "hidden service" through TOR is also fairly simple. Instructions on setting up services through TOR can be found at http://www.torproject.com/.

Note: As mentioned in the talk page for this article, setting up an onion domain may be more difficult than that URL suggests.
